Personally I hated it. Being somewhat of a SEA vet, I found it crowded, over touristed, expensive and with too many annoying hipsters. You can't walk ten feet without a scooter blocking your path and a red eyed local going "Taxi?" Literally every ten feet in Semniyak. Canggu maybe isn't so bad, but still the traffic is annoying. The roads are super small and traffic is horrible. If you're into walking places, Canngu isn't for you. You'll get run over. So either drive a scooter or get used to dealing with the taxi mafia. There's a war between them and ride hailing apps at the moment. So when you call a grab, after he drops you off there's a chance he'll be beaten to death. But this is normal around the world at the moment, for less affluent countries anyway. 

Pros? It's beautiful. Lots of stuff to see and do. Unfortunately you'll be charged money for literally everything, including walking through rice paddies. The landscapes, the architecture. I know Bali is a big island with a lot to do. You can rent a villa for $1200 usd a month and live like a drug dealer with your own indoor swimming pool. So gather four nomads and have your own gated compound. Lots of nightlife, clubs, if you're into that stuff. I'm not. For parties I'd rather go to a beach place with hippies in Thailand. The local food is good, the tourist food is amazing if you're willing to pay western prices. But the quality is very high. Overall it's not an expensive place, but it can be. 

I know Bali is a huge island but I'm just referring to Canggu. It's just to westernized for me. Too crowded with westerners. But if you want to go meet nomads and do western priced fitness, meditation and yoga classes it's the place to be. Plus the beaches are super polluted. Argh. I couldn't wait to leave. I doubt I'll be back soon. But if I do I'm definitely renting a villa and learning to surf. 

Cool place to do business. But not a place I'd want to live for long. Maybe I'll give it another chance one day.

To be honest, as an English man with no use of Indo Bahasa, I've got no chance (like the last chance saloon) in finding an English speaking human..unless it Hiya, Hello, How are you, language is totally useless unless you know sign and body expressions! And that Works! Point to the food in the picture on the wall, have small cash in you pocket (and bigger cash stored away out of sight)  You buy food in the picture and only get half of what you saw! Yer, It happens like Shx.all the time where ever you go! Locals are wise.. but expect it and order a double portion...Lol! 
 I am Tim Love from the UK and I have married an Indonesian beauty! We do not live together because the UK law makes it a terrible ordeal to fix...(ongoing issues) But, as I said... If you are WHITE.. then you must expect to be RIPPED OFF !

Gili Air is a wonderful tropical island with good enough internet, amazing beaches and affordable accommodation and food. The locals are super friendly and it's super safe.
There is a party and live music every night for those that feel like socialising(with the exception of Thursday nights). There's a well equipped gym, Salsa dancing Night every Monday at the schick-kitsch mexican restaurant, stand up paddle, lots of wonderful yoga shalas, kite surfing, snorkelling, diving and lots of food options. It's actually becoming a vegetarian and vegan paradise lately. There's also a co-working space as part of a Yoga Center. Several music and traditional festivals are held every year and it's wonderful to watch local weddings. Land prices are also still reasonable given that the island will be developing at a faster pace now. The quality of people that seem to crowd Gili Air are very different to those that go to Gili Trawangan. Gili Air attracts a 30+ couples, families and friends groups who don't mind splashing out on nice accommodation, spa treatments and great culinary experiences.
All in all, my favorite place so far with an average of 322 days of sunshine! The climate doesn't get any better than this anywhere in the world(and given most other exotic islands are prone to hurricanes... there's never been a hurricane or tornado in the Gilis).

"Don't go to Jakarta" is what people from Jakarta tell you. 

But you do. It can't be that bad, right? Then you arrive. Although "arriving" is a big word for getting stuck in traffic first for hours. When you do finally arrive in your apartment, you open the windows and wonder why you can't see further than 10 meters. It must be a foggy day? No, it's not fog, it's smog, and it's an every day occurrence in Jakarta, a city that is now competing with Beijing for worst air quality in the world. 

What's good about Jakarta? It's one of the few places in Indonesia (except maybe Bali) that's open-minded. Jakartans are friendly, helpful and warm acting as if Jakarta is still just a small Indonesian village and that's great. It's also one of the fastest growing cities in Asia. It's cosmopolitan. But all that doesn't weigh up to the negatives that is Jakarta right now.

Clean up the air, fix the traffic, and Jakarta might be liveable in a decade.

I've been living in Semarang for about 6 months at this point. Living at the "Candiland Apartment" which is reasonably priced 2.5 million - 3.5 million rupiah per month. Great view of the city. It's hot here. Usually like 35+ degrees. The beach is all industrial. Usually a lot of traffic. In the southern part of the city there are some small hills which are cool but to go anywhere with nice air, cool temperatures and big mountains it's at least an hour south. Sometimes the locals will give you a dirty look but if you smile at them they perk right up and smile back usually. There's not too much going on here in my opinion. But there are tons of nice restaurants with good views and the Tinder game here is strong. It has nice malls - I bought a new apple laptop here - quality is fine. Prices are good. If you like vegetables and non-fried food it can be both expensive and hard to find. All in all it's a pretty cool city. I could stay here but I've decided to move to Bandung instead with hopes of more green space, less expensive rent and a cooler climate.

Honestly, this is an awesome place to be if you're actually trying to get work done. It's a bit of an older vibe than Canggu, and there's certainly a big chunk of yogi's kicking around — but I liked it much better than Canggu and found it less pretentious. Plus, you can drive down there in 45mins whenever you want some beach or party vibes. 

As others mentioned, there's some great coworking spaces, cheap warungs, some really nice spots to stay cheaply if you go just outside of the mad touristy areas like Hanoman/Monkey Forest/Penestan.

You're definitely going to want a scooter, and you'll learn quickly which roads to avoid at what times because the traffic can be pretty crazy — but that's true for Canggu as well.

It's green and lush, there's great food and a handful of good bars, lots of great pools and chillout spots, good yoga and gyms, and you're within 45mins ride of the beach, waterfalls, and jungles. Pretty damn good in my books.

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Tourism Indonesia to visit as a state guest to capture their country through my own interpretation of how I view their beautiful country. Obtaining this photo was not an easy feat as we had to speed boat 3 hours from land to the island, followed by a small dinghy bringing us to shore, and a hike up a dirt/rock covered track (kudos to my model for doing so with a dress!) all whilst chasing the sunset light to reach the top.
